Michael Ondaatje. Author of The English Patient, Anil's Ghost, In the Skin of a Lion and many more.

Most beautiful and sensual prose writer I have ever come across. He has an unsurpassed skill at giving real depth and emotion to each and every character. So much so that you feel bereft at the end of every novel, as if the people you have lived with for the duration of reading have died.

Excluding Songwiting... Hmm...

Dale Brown. His novels, about military battles and covert operations (A bit like Tom Clancy, but better in my view) in the modern age are amazing. Day of the Cheetah has to be his best book. (A thought-controlled fighter plane developed in Area 51 is stolen by a Soviet spy/test pilot. He goes a bit loopy thanks to the mind/aircraft interface and tries to run from both the americans and the soviets to keep the plane for himself)

It's not just about the action (although you can see it as clearly as if it's happening in front of you). Dale manages to get in the minds of the characters, and you can understand both hero and villain alike.
