With a bucket of water over the tower followed by a minute in the microwave.
But seriously....does safe mode exist in XP?? If it does, then go on in safe mode and see what happens. If you can get on in safe mode then the problem may be able to be fixed. Again, I dont know if there is a safe mode in XP.

What you could try is to reinstall Windows on top of itself.
If you have Windows XP, simply place your Windows CD into the CD/DVD-ROM drive, reboot your computer and watch the monitor. You'll see something along the lines of Press Del/F1/F12 to enter CMOS/BIOS setup. Press this key.
When you page opens up, look for Boot Sequence. You must ensure that the boot sequence is first boot device = CD-ROM, followed by Hard disk. Save the options and reboot.
When booted, it gives you the option to Install Windows XP. Click on it. When the next page loads, check the drop down menu says Upgrade and NOT New Installation, otherwise it'll put a copy of Windows in a new folder and you won't be able to see any other programs that you presently have installed without reinstalling them.
If this doesn't solve the problem, I'm afraid you're going to have to go through the same procedure, but this time select New Installation and have it format your hard drive. This will mean, however, that you'll lose all the information that you presently have installed on your hard drive.

Try doing a crtl+alt+delete
Click the New Task button at the button
Type in explorer.exe
That will force the computer to display the desktop
Sounds like you have something hanging the background during the bootup before it reaches the desktop
Hopefully if you can get it up once, it will be alright after that
If you can not, the hard drive itself should still be good. If you have pictures, music, etc, that you want to keep, you whould be able to take the hard drive out of your computer and put it into another computer as a second hard drive. You would then be able to copy anything you want before you wipe the drive and reinstall Windows.

seems like explorer.exe isn't booting when you log on, or maybe is crashing
when you log on hit ctrl alt del and then type new task explorer.exe
If it loads, try going to start menu...run and typing msconfig, then doing a diagnostic startup next time you reboot. You can also try rebooting in safe mode (keep hitting F8 while booting) and see if you can see the problem there.

First, try this: Right click on the desktop, click on "Arrange Icons by", and make sure that the "Show Icons" option is checkmarked.
