Now my system boots, I log on to Windows, no Icon and the Task bar dissappears.
It Seems SOme part of Windows related to dispalying the desktop is not functioning correctly. any advice???

You can first try the simple fix. Right click your desktop and go to "arrange icons by" and make sure "show desktop icons" is checked. If it is, then the issue could be in the registry. Here is a fix you can try but be forewarned you should backup the registry first. Go to start button, to run, type in regedit, hit enter, when the registry window appears make sure "my computer" is highlighted and from the menu chose "file" and then "export" and save a copy somewhere safe. When that is complete go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm#fix
and in the dropdown field of the "fixes for windows xp" you will see an option for "restore desktop icons and taskbar" chose this option and download the file. The file is a call "nodesktop.reg" and when you double click the file XP may ask if you want to run the file, say yes then it will ask you if you want to add this information to your registry, say yes. and reboot. That should fix the problem.

Try doing a ctrl+alt+delete and select New Task at the bottom
Type in explorer.exe
This should force the Desktop to come up
Hopefully if you get it up once it will work right after that
Sounds like you have something that is hung in the background before it get to the desktop

You can also try booting in Safe Mode
Turn the computer on and repeatedly press the F8 key until a screen appears that give you Safe Mode as an option
Again, if you can get it up once, the problem will probably be resolved
