Well, here is my position on this: I am a strong environmentalist and a back country hiker, camper, etc. The rule I have learned to live by regarding any "litter" is: *PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT*. While you may think the food scraps you leave behind have no impact, you cannot be sure of that. They may be foreign to the area, have residual pesticides on them or other chemicals, or attract undesirable "critters" rather than desirable ones.
Legally, of course, this is definitely littering -- there are many areas where this is a law on the books. A quick search on the net will bring up many instances of this. But I think the above address the true issue -- the moral and ethical one. Take you core home with you -- and put it on your compost pile. You do, of course, have one -- right!! ;~)

Yes, it is littering. Biodegradability is no excuse for littering. Sh!t is biodegradable, but throwing that on the street would get you a littering ticket I think! Also, I recall a boy scout handbook saying not to throw things like that on the ground while hiking. Especially orange peels, which take many decades to degrade.

No although it may be deemed littering by local authorities, an apple core is biodegradable and either rots back into the earth as fertilizer or is eaten by another animal.

It´ll decompose. It cant be too different from an apple falling off a tree out there. Unless the apple is treated with a lot of space age technology, thus polluting nature.

No, it's not littering. Apple cores are biodegradable. Raccoons and other animals probably eat them within 2 hours or so.

From an ecological point of view, no I don't think it is littering since it will biodegrade relatively quickly.
