He changed their names because they finally matured and learned enough to represent Him as one of His people.
As most things changed from the OT to the NT, Christians become a new person when they find Christ. Some say they're born again, some say they are saved. Over and over again throughout the NT there are references to becoming a new being in Christ.

I believe there are lots of people who have had their name changed...
or at least given a new name by which God will know them.

God changed people's names to better reflect their spiritual being. Much te same as Jesus did with some of the apostles. I am sure you have your won name in Heaven that the father knows you by. Let us hope it isn't Mud.

MY NAME WAS GIVEN, YET WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, I SHORTENED IT. WHEN I CAME TO GOD, THAT PERSON DIED, NO LONGER TO EXSIST. MY NEW NAME IS WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL ALONG.
AS FAR AS WHY DID GOD CHANGE NAMES IN THE BIBLE, ESPECIALLY OLD TESTMENT. THEIR NAMES MEANT LITERAL THINGS. GOD GAVE THEM THE NAMES OF THEIR DESTINIES. ABRAHAM= FATHER OF MANY NATIONS.
