Haha, my dad used to ask me this all the time. He is the kind of guy that never goes to the doc though, which rubbed off on me. I don't trust them to practice on me if I can help it, and I am very healthy still.

Not to say doctors are bad or anything, the medical profession has helped tons of people, it just isn't for me and I don't need it. Not to mention all the things I've seen and heard about the medical profession.

They practice because Medicine is constantly advancing. Sometimes what they do really is practice, it is a new surgery or the method is yet to be tried. Also the more often you do a surgery the better you get at it. Much like a Lawyer "practices" law, because it is a constantly evolving field.

medical doctors and legal experts practice what they recognize. "practice" in this sense has a diverse definition than practice to study some thing. practice for a occupation means putting into result what you recognize; that's this sense of practice contained in the cliche "practice what you carry forth".

I know you're having fun with this. But in case you're interested. . .

The more original sense of "practice" is to "perform/carry out" and especially to do so habitually or customarily. (Compare "practice kindness" or "make it a practice to..."). From this it takes on the meaning, in some contexts, of "do repeatedly IN ORDER TO improve or retain skill". Perhaps this stems from the simple fact that those who make a practice of a particular behavior do generally improve, and those who do not. . . well. . . so would you prefer that your doctor did NOT practice medicine?!

Two reasons:

1. They are trying to be perfect. (Practice makes perfect).

2. They never get it right.

If you've ever had the misfortune of being sick and in a teaching hospital - those hospitals where they learn on the job - you would know why they call it practice. They are learning. Dr.s' spend their entire life learning - if they are any good.
