hmmm.. good question and tricky one too. For me I would say that it is pride of a person or a group of people that take over them to pursue into violence. if we just kept to ourselves what we believe in and not compare vocally what we think of the others faith then maybe there will be less violence that is a result from Religious differnces.

The fact is that religions aren't peaceful. Many conflicts in the word are caused by or strongly linked to religion: Middle East conflicts, Northern Ireland and liberation theolody vs evangelism in South America, to name a few.
Religion is only peaceful when everyone is one religion. As that will never, and should never happen, religion will never be peaceful.

That is a good question, I've wondered that my self. The answer that I came up with is that people use religion as an excuse to kill people. It's how people see their religion. Real religious people are peaceful people but there are a few that are basically evil but say they are religious.

One of the dark side of human nature is the need to want to destroy or conquer those whom you identify difference in including ideologies.
As Christians mean the way of Christ there was not part Christ ever encourage Violence or even condone any such act. He preach more of turn the left cheek, however there as been no example of this for a long time.

humans are basically animal, animal in origin and animal in nature (territorial, suspicious, aggressive)
we are the naked apes with the pointed sticks, and with our pointed sticks we rose to the top of the food chain
we have the ability to believe, almost entirely a human trait, and we crave ritual, order, and tradition, we love to be told what to do and think and believe, and we want to believe the priests.
religion is a way for men to focus on 'otherwordly' realities, beyond the material realm, because humans have the ability to believe in the invisible
but we are still animals, and we still have an aggressive nature hard-wired into us, and it overrides 'reason'
God is, that is actually more obvious to the least civilized, and religion is one way for man to approach the divine, like a crutch, or training wheels
What Jesus said, and Bhudda and Lao Tse to a point, is we don't have to 'go anywhere' or 'do anything' to know God, we just have to 'be'
humans are too busy to just 'be' now, which makes them hostile and aggressive

Priests of all religions have a vested interest in their particular religion because they are in receipt of cash for carrying out their priestly work. They therefore will condemn any other religion which threatens their lively hood. Such happened in ancient Egypt and is happening today.

Its largely because we are slaves to our own fears. Some cling tightly to their faith as a knee jerk response to save them from their irrational fear of oblivion. They feel threatened about other religions who hold a different view about God since it undermines their belief. And acting out in fear they strike out to obliterate the perceived threat.
The second world war taught us all a bitter lesson, how wrong it was to believe that one race is superior to the other. This undeclared world war we are in will likewise teach future generations a similar lesson: that it is outright folly to believe that God would favor one person or faith over the other.

Because while all religions teach the same message in essence, peoples understanding (or lack of) of their own religion, as well as others, prevents them from evolving spiritually, this makes them unable to practice what they preach.

Because of "wrong interpretations of religious scriptures" which have converted religions into....competitiors who are claiming my dad strongest type silly things.
Thank God eastern religions (Hinduism and Buddhism) are different and are REALLY peaceful and spiritual.
