It hibernates when the battery is low. Go to control panel - after you've recharged your battery and check power options. It gives you an alarm to warn you that it's about to hibernate or go on system standby and you can set the time limit and run a program at that time. But my alarm doesn't appear to do anything - the damn thing just puts the screen saver on or hibernates. Try to run it on the mains most of the time and don't let your battery get too low - and then it's a little less irritating.

Apparently you did not get the computer completely powered down, or it hung during the shut down. So it has been running until it totally drained the battery and went into hibernation to protect your hard drive. You will need to plug the laptop in. Once it gets power again you should be able to restart it.

Yes, you sure screwed the pooch!
Pull the power AC cord, and the battery off the mainboard for 20 seconds.
Re-boot. Check the CMOS SETUP options and make them be what you would like, such as boot order: CDrom, floppy, hard drive. Set Video memory settings for onboard VGA. There is one for PCHealth, that sets CPU frequency and multipliers.
Never shut down abruptly, it screws up the settings sometimes, but, definitely loses your work and settings in files that were open!
Try out http://pclinuxos.com in the LiveCDrom to see if that boots, as the hard drive isn't used... Hard drives often fail upon shutdown, and mostly when power is jpulled abruptly!
Run most of my systems 24/7/365 and dread shutdowns... but, I run SCSI drives that are made to run like this. for ten years, without fail.

im assuming by saying open you mean you are on a laptop. That would indicate your battery needs charging so you need to plug in the power adapter to charge.

when you went to hibernate it saves your settings as they are, so when you turn back on, everything is as you left it, if in that time your battery has gone flat, you need to charge it or change it.
