Acute pyelonephritis, also known as a kidney infection is a common condition, particulary in women. This is because the tube through which bacteria may enter the urinary tract , the urethra, is generally shorter in women. Various conditions that reduce the flow of urine make you more susceptible.
With prompt treatment complications are unlikely. In an extremely young or frail person the infection may spread into the blood and lead to blood poisoning. If you have repeated attacks of acute pyelonephritis, however, you may have a problem in you urinary tract that needs to be corrected. Antibiotics generally bring the infection under control in 24 to 48 hours. although treatment may continue for 14 days, or longer in some cases.

I understand a kidney infection is often when a urinary tract infection has been left untreated. Urinary tract infections are usually caused by a bacterial infection - short distance from one area to another - Always, always wipe from front to back!! Otherwise it can be caused by something messing up the delicate balance of good bacteria in the area. Too much soap or perfumed products; too much sugar in your diet; too much yeast in your diet... If it's a kidney infection you need to see a doctor and get it checked out properly, quickly. If it's a urinary tract infection, you need to rebalance the natural order. You can buy tablets, sachets and creams over the counter, but they've never worked as well or as quickly for me as the following. Firstly, cooling and relieving on the ichy sore area - Live natural yoghurt - definately no sugar, or fruit added!!! Smear a little on the area - or on a pantliner works well. You'll have to change often and Yes, it does cook and smell pretty bad; but it does relieve the pain - therefore worth it. Secondly, pearl barley water - not juice. You need pearl barley, you have to put about a centimeter in the bottom of a pan and fill the pan with water and boil it until the barley goes soft and the water goes cloudy, then you have to drink the water off it. I guarantee this will work within a few hours if you drink it all; but it is minging! I did however, once make a friend for life from this advice. Cranberry juice is a more palitable option for most, but it must have no sugar in it or it won't do the job - which is pretty hard to come by. I hope you feel better soon.

I recently had been very sick with what we thought was a simple kidney infection, but it acctulaly turned out that I had ecoli about eight years ago and it never went away. I also have pylonuphritus(sorry for spelling) it is the deteration of the kidneys and the ecoli I had set up home in the dead scar tissue in my kidney and the only thing that would help me was 24 days of gentimyicin iv done at home. I hope that you dont have any of these problems and your recovery goes real well my recovery took 9 months and Im jsut starting to get back to life now so drink lots of fluids and keep flushed it will help no matter what the problem is. The idea is to keep the kidneys functioning during this time.
Hope you feel better soon,

The prognosis of a severe kindey infection depends mostly on the drug therapy used and how the person is health wise overall. In most cases a very strong antibiotic is prescribed and the patient needs to drink plenty of water and cranberry juice.

It depends on the causative organism and the total involvement. Pyelonephritis is very serious and may even require removal of the kidney. Obvious tubercular nephritis is one that needs long term therapy...life-long. You didn't specify the infectious agent and one can't be specific without knowing the source of the kidney infection.

Depends on the overall health of the patient and the function level of the kidney.

If the person follows the treatment there might not be any more complications, but things get worse if the infection spreads throughout the body.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
