I'm cooking Christmas dinner this year I don't know why I volunteered but I did! I want to do something different not the traditional turkey! Do you have any ideas? I need a starter, main & pudding!

Starter - try making some home made pate with chicken livers - very nice and very easy (you need a blender) served with french toast and fresh cranberries

Main - Stick with the Turkey for it's traditional value but do something interesting with the vegetables - e.g. oven roast carrots, courgettes, onions and garlic with fresh sage, make potato croquettes from mash coated in breadcrumbs then roast them in olive oil etc.

Dessert - How about an american cheesecake with a mincemeat and apple topping (again to keep a bit of tradition)

The best Christmas dinner I've had is roast goose. I know turkey is traditional but I do find it boring and goose is actually just as traditional. I'd never cooked or eaten goose before but I found a great recipe online which served it with 2 different stuffings, a force meat one up one end and a potato one (I think) up the other end. The force meat one was was one of the most delicious things I've evey tasted - very similar to goose liver pate.

As for a starter and dessert - I'd be tempted to not bother with a starter, especially if you're having the goose or something equally rich for your main. For dessert, I always like to have a choice, so maybe something like mince pies or pudding for the traditionalists, classic lemon tart, and anything chocolatey!

well here in aus , we tend not to do the turkey thing cos its so hot at christmas
ive done xmas dinner for a bit crowd (like 13)
so i just do some really nice little entrees to be passed around as guest arrive, u can find heaps of recipes for things like that and make them the day before
then to sit down, ive done lots of nice vegetable dishes, salads, and some hot and cold meats
If your not used to cooking for a crowd, its better to have a nice meal that u can prepare mainly beforehand than try to do a traditional xmas dinner and screw it up
how about cooking a turkey, but serving it with differnt kinds of vegetable dishes so ur not frantic whether the potatoes are roasted ok. Things u can prepare the day before and just heat up like cauliflower and broccoli cheese etc. You can make lots of dishes the day before. It takes the pressure of u,
I know its not traditional but why not break the mold?
and for dessert I always do the classic plum pudding with brandy sauce, and trifle

Ham. The traditional dinner at Christmas is ham. Go to the Honey Baked Ham Store, pay their outrageous price for a ham. Then relax.

As for a starter, beer, with crackers and cheese-whiz is good.

As for a pudding, just the cheese whiz would work. You may want to have more beer on hand to wash it down, though...

And the most important thing, is to remember what Christmas is really for. The birth of Jesus. So put the ham in the oven, and then get out of the house and celebrate in church that morning.

But don't forget to buy the beer and cheese whiz the day before, because most stores will be closed on Christmas Day.

Merry Christmas to you....

Well, you could do a lot. Roast leg of lamb, prime rib roast, steaks on the grill, grilled ham, stuffed pork tenderloin, exotic stuffed chickens, Cornish hens. You could also have a theme, Mexican Xmas, Hawaiian, middle eastern, what is traditional for you may not be in other countries. Also you could have everyone bring a dish of there favorite side dish food and have a Xmas picnic. For dessert you could have a make your own Xmas sundaes, have everyone bring a dessert or different kind of pie and have a dessert buffet. There is sooo much you can do to make it fun and creative.

If you want to stick with the Christmas theme how about the following:
1: wild mushroom and walnut soup or chestnut, bacon and thyme soup
2:Roast goose stuffed with prunes in Armagnac served with crunchy roast potatoes and braised red cabbage or a spiced beef served with either jacket or roast potatoes and pickles, chutneys etc
3:Apple and mincemeat strudel or mincemeat ice cream
good luck and enjoy x

what about

starter.... french onion soup or goats cheese salad .....nothing too heavy because you dont want to fill your guests up too soon

main course..... roast leg of lamb, roast puds, honey glazed carrots, spiced winter cabbage (white cabbage cooked with apples and lemon juice. drain and add butter and sprinkle with grated nutmeg). and maybe roast leeks.

dessert.....white chocolate mousse or caramellized oranges with ice cream ( both of which can be made the day before so your not too busy on the day.

How about a nice ham, roasted potatoes, veggies, rice pudding for dessert or tapioca pudding(homemade). You could start off with a homemade chowder, soup or a nice salad.
