Where did you buy it? Does it have the Microsoft hologram, or is it written on with magic marker? Did it come with a Certificate of Authenticity?

right click on the "my computer" icon, select properties, you winXP version and service pack level should be displayed on the "General " tab, as well as other useful information

by the way, if you dont have an original version, XP will not allow you to load service packs ... this is Microsofts, "try before you buy" approach, you can load a basic version of XP, but you cant get any of the patches or fixes if its a "pirated" copy
