Going there soon and wondered what the town was like.

Well, it is just a small market town in deepest Mid Devon, a few miles north of Exeter. It has a small number of old, fairly interesting buildings including a fine old church (used to be a cathedral before Exeter cathedral got the job). The town's most famous son was St Boniface (Patron saint of Germany and the Netherlands, so a few teutonic visitors turn up everynow and then, much to the bemusement of the locals) It is not much to look at as a town, but I like it. You can still find some independent shops there, instead of the usual high street chain stores. Old farming families live alongsde a small but growing number of 'alternative types'....so far quite peacefully. There are several pubs, best is 'Three little Pigs' in Parlament Street (crazy decor, crazy landlord). The countryside around the town is beautiful. People can walk around in their muddy wellington boots and noone bats an eyelid. Refined it is not, but it is a breath of fresh air for me, coming from Italy.

I lived there and went to school from about 1963 to 1973. It used to be a market town but even when I lived there a fire station had been built on the old market place. The part time fire brigade used to be summoned to the station by a siren that could be heard all over town. Only a minute or so after the siren you would hear the claxon of the fire engine as it set out.

I drove through there back in July when I was on holiday down there. It seemed a nice enough place, but of course, it depends what you are going to be doing there!
