The Panama Canal runs from the Southeast at the Pacific end to the Northwest at the Atlantic.

Canal authorities classify transits as Northbound from Pacific to Alantic; and Southbound from Atlantic to Pacific.

One travels East. You can circumnavigate the world travelling East all the time - just because you might be in the East, doesn't mean anywhere you go is West.. In Russia for example, 'The West' lies East (America) and West (Europe). North too...
