This year all NUS card will be called Democracy cards and will prove that you are a member of the Union. The SU has stated that shops should no longer offer discount on production of this card. Discounts should only be offered on their SU Extra Cards, which the students have to pay for. This is a major change in the basic workings of union membership. As a union, such a change would have required a national vote from its members before implementation. Since no national ballot occured, that I know about, is the SU able to recind the benefits of the standard card?

Yes, it is legal, what happens is the NUS offer you the opportunity to buy membership in return for certain benefits. This is referred to as an "invitation to treat".

They can reserve the right to alter or withdraw certain benefits at will.

It probably was voted on but at executive level, you will probably find that they can do this under the constitution of the NUS. You would have to check but to do so it would probably take so long to pin it down that you would have probably graduated by the time you found an answer.

Don't forget, you don't have to join the NUS if you don't want to.
