I'm going to a hindu wedding on sunday, I just wondered if there was colours you shouldn't wear. I have a pretty red dress but should I avoid this as the bride will be in red & gold?

Sorry to be ignorant!

hey there,
Unless otherwise specified, You can wear any colour that you want, even Black! If youre hindu wedding isnt with a group of traditionalists who ask their guests to wear certain colours and avoid other colours, then you shdnt have a problem

And as for the red dress, WEAR IT! today, the wedding trosseau of bride isnt red any more; they come in differnt colours like pink or peach.... Modern hindu weddings dont stick to one colour...

So dont worry so much ...
Just have a blast, and hope you know how to dance to our bollywood music....!!!

And one more thing; if you want to go for a traditional indian outfit instead of a western one, check with the bride or grooms side about the different options like sari( 6 yard cloth wrapped around you), ghagra choli( a short top with a skirt), leghna( someting similar to a ghagra), Salwar Kameez( pant and a long top) etc.

Hope i helped you out!

As a non-traditionalist Hindu who just got married, I would suggest you NOT wear red to the wedding. This is for the same reasons you do not wear white to a Christian wedding. Keep in mind, she may not have any issue with you wearing red.

There is also the possibility that she will not wear red but another colour in that same pallet (ie. fuschia, orange etc.) and there are some brides who will wear white.

I agree with the other answers in that you do not wear black.

Keep in mind Indian weddings are very festive and full of colours.

Some colours I suggest you wear:

Blue - any shade
Baby pink
Yellow/gold
Green - any shade
Orange

Enjoy!

I have heard that if you are young woman who wears red to an Indian wedding it can mean that you are looking for a husband. So, you might want to avoid red -or not depending on your marital status!
