When I was growing up we had to finish dinner if we wanted desert.
So I was raised with eating everything on my plate, and eating Desert Afterwards.
So the next question is Why did my Mom serve desert after dinner? Possibly because she wanted us to eat nutritious food first.
But in any restaurant, desert is offered after dinner.
So Why do they serve desert after dinner in a restaurant? Perhaps we are not hungry any more and something sweet will tempt us to eat some more. I Surely don't want to eat food after my dinner.
I Remember the old time holiday dinners with the extended family. You never had to leave the table. Soup to nuts and beyond. And some of the deserts were out of this world. They were served after the fruit (Grapes Tangerines, easy to open + nibble while talking) and Nuts(in the shells)or before?
I'll be seeing My Mom for her 90th Birthday this month. I'll have to ask her. She can still remember some things. I bet she will remember desert. She sure has a sweet tooth. I guess at 90 it is great to have any teeth at all!

I don't know about you, but it's habit with me. My mother loved to cook and bake, so growing up we always had dessert with our dinner; and coming in the door, we usually didn't ask what's for supper, but what's for dessert! I would look forward to it all day - my mother would take turns baking our favourite desserts. So, if I don't have something sweet after dinner, my meal doesn't seem complete to me, and, like you, I must have something!

Depending on what you have for dinner, you're filling up on some nutrients and then your body wants others to complement it.
It's like when you're really full you can't have another bite of your dinner, but there's room for cake- you feel full having too much of the same thing, and then your body wants to balance it out with something else.
There's a whole scienficic thing behind this, but I can't really remember the details!!
Also, did you used to smoke? I used to finish dinner and have a cigarette, so when I quit I felt uneasy after dinner and needed something else to take it's place!!

It's learned behaviour. You don't need a sweet, your body has learnt to expect one. After a week or so being strict with yourslef you will find that the urge is less. If I want one I often have a herbal tea, or fruit juice or something and that's enough.

You probably eat something spicy at dinner, which is why you crave for something sweet after that.
But you're not alone; I tend to crave for sweets whenever I skip a meal or have anything too spicy, too. It's the way my body works!

Apparently thirst makes us crave for something sweet. So fill up on water after/during dinner to curb that urge!

Eating something sweet actually signals the end of your meal to your brain. It tells the brain okay, I'm done, you can start digesting now.

Sweet is the opposite of savory. I guess we instinctively crave balance. I'm the same way.
