Yes - very much so.

You have to keep in mind - no only is Rumsfeld responsible for running the military and executing the presidents plans/desires for the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Global War on Terror - but he is also trying to transform the military into a 21st century fighting force.

Not only does Rumsfeld have to answer to the President, he also has to answer to Congress. While he doesn't report (i.e. - they are not his boss), they do have oversight over the military, and they do control the purse strings for the military.

In a normal time it's difficult being Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld is doing it while fighting two wars, the global war on terror - and changing the way we fight battles.

The military is being transformed from a "Cold War" era military, where most of our assets were based in Europe, and our force alignment was geared to a land war in Europe.

Now, the military has to be a lot quicker, lighter and more flexible. We won't see the land wars of WW2 anymore, tanks won't be as useful as they were. We won't march across terrian with tanks like we did in WW2. Sure, we can use tanks - but with the sort of "hit and run" tactics of the terrorists in Iraq - tanks aren't as useful (sure, they're heavily armored - but not they're not mobile or agile enough).

Any organization is resistant to change - and the Department of Defense is no different. Military commanders don't want to change the way things are - because that means things will be different - and that's an unkown.

While Rumsfeld certainly hasn't been perfect, all in all, I think he has done a good job.

The problem is that his overconfidence of winning the war caused the US to faulter. If you go and look back at video footage of Rumsfeld giving speeches imediately after 9/11, he was "cocky" and very bold in his persona. His miscaluculations preceeding the Iraq war obviously was his downfall. Not listening to the cheifs of staff and advisors but making his own decisions like a dictator. He learned his lesson but is trying to save face. Take a look at him now, he is behind the scences and trying to dilute the blame as much as he can.

He is in my opinion, one of the worst we have every had in the history of the USA. May we rise again like a nation and honor those who put their lives on the line everday and more importantly be united as a nation once again.

Wow, Rumsfeld is the reason I hate Bush. He is so sanctimonious, manipulative, his thirst for blood is far vaster than anything I've seen in my life. He wants to be "King of the World" When he told our troops that they don't get to fight the fight they want and they have to make do with substandard protection, Armour etc it sent chills up my spine. I look at him and I see the same cruelty that we see in picture of Hitler. He is a very very bad man

No, Rummy and Cheney are stuffing their pockets and they are on a power trip regardless of how many brave soldiers get injured or die fighting this ridiculous war for oil. Rummy is one of the worst Americans to ever serve his country because he could care less about this country. He is beholden to the rich and we all know the rich do not put their children's life on the line.

I don't have confidence in any of our current leadership from the top down. I believe our leadership and the approach to foreign and domestic policy is misguided. Sadly, no one better is on the horizon, either democrat or republican.

I think Rumsfield is doing a good job. That is one of the hardest jobs in America. All of those jobs we elect people to is hard. No one can do a prefect job and please everyone. It's just isn't going to happen. The best thing we can do, is vote them out of office other wise stand behind them and let them do their job.
