Word is a proper word processor with a range of fonts, spell checker, grammar checker - it can also link to Outlook to do emails and you can use it to do web pages. Wordpad does the same as Notepad - basic text but with HTML and you can put pictures in to wordpad. If you want to send someone a screen shot press print scn and then paste it in a wordpad file and attach it to an email. The extension for Wordpad file is rtf. Rich text format. Basically, text with a few extras - not a full word processor.

Word has many more features and is the industry standard word processing programme whereas Wordpad is a very simple word processor. It's like comparing a Ferrari with a Ford - they're both cars but one is a whole lot better than the other.

Any document created in Wordpad will work in Word but documents created in Word won't necessarily work in Wordpad.

If it's purely for your own use and you only want to use relatively simple files then Wordpad will suffice but if you want to share files with friends and colleagues, access material on the internet or doing anything other than the basics then you should use Word.

The differences AMONG these word processors is complexity and ease of use. Word processor could be any on board computer file. NotePad and WordPad are earlier less complex WP files than MS Word. MS Word is for professional business operations that want to put a little flair into their company documents or letters but can be incorporated into any computer using a Windows 98,2000,XP or better OS.

MS word is constantly being upgraded being a part of MS office suite. It has features like wordart, clipart etc. We can insert sounds, pictures etc into documents.
Wordpad is a word processor, nothing more. We can add simple effects like font, font size etc.

Lots of extra word-processing features. If you don't want to pay you can use open office which for all but full time professional use is perfectly adequate.
