The Satan of Islam was a "Jinn", created from fire as all Jinns were and still are. Angels were and still are created from light. While Angels and Jinns are considered "Angels" in Islam, because they were created from the same material (fire is light, and light is fire), but Jinns are lower than the Angels, because Jinns are like humans; they do sin, while the Angels are perfect and Sinless. The similarity between Angels and Jinns is like the similarity between humans and animals. Created from almost the same material, but two different WORLDS. We also have "human-angels" V.S. evil and bad ones.
Anyway, satan's original name in the Noble Quran was Iblis
Let us look at the following Noble Verses from the Noble Quran:
Adam was first created on Earth: "Behold, thy Lord said to the Angels: 'I will create a vicegerent on earth.'...(The Noble Quran, 2:34)"
Iblis became Satan: "Behold! We said to the Angels, 'Bow down to Adam': they bowed down except Iblis. He was One of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord....(The Noble Quran, 18:50)"
"It is We Who Created you and gave you shape; then We bade the Angels bow down to Adam, and they bowed down; not so Iblis; he refused to be of those who bow down. (Allah) said: 'What prevented thee from bowing down when I commanded thee? He said: 'I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay. (Allah) said: 'Get thee down from this: it is not for thee to be arrogant here: get out, for thou art of the meanest (of creatures). He said: 'Give me respite till the day they are raised up. (Allah) said: 'Be thou amongst those who have respite.' He said: 'Because thou hast thrown me out of the Way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on thy Straight Way: Then will I assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left: Nor wilt Thou find, in most of them, gratitude (of Thy mercies).' (Allah) said: 'Get out from this, disgraced and expelled. If any of them follow thee - Hell will I fill with you all. (The Noble Quran, 11-18)"
Iblis was a Jinn who was raised and lived with the Angels. He is a powerful Jinn, and Allah Almighty loved him so much that He treated him like an Angel, until Iblis broke Allah Almighty's Commands and turned into Satan and was expelled with disgrace from the Group of the Angels and from Paradise.

First, Arabic language is different than English language, even some Arabic natives will predict the same conclusion like you did, but its simply not the correct interpretation.
Iblis is not an angel, he is Jinn, but he was a servant of GOD and he led his army to fight the enemies of GOD (also Jinn), for a very long time, he also has a very great knowledge that even some angles used to ask him (knowledge), his first sin was that he was being "prideful" so that he refused to kneel to Adam when he was asked by Allah.

Where did you learn your Arabic? Yes it is not only correct but also very meaningful, when you ask the masters to bow then automatically the order goes to who is below them and Iblis was not an angel but below them (Jin) and he had to bow without thinking.

Yes ,Iblis was an angel but he is no longer one !
ALLAH asked the angels to bow to Adam alaihissalam .All except this one obeyed almighty .Iblis who was so proud of himself being made of fire refused to bow to mud .GOD punished him and called him Laenathullahialaihi-the cursed one .He is still around us trying to mislead the believers and make them sinners like him .He is sure to be punished at the day of judgment .
MAY ALLAH INCLUDE ALL THE TRUE BELIEVERS IN HIS HEAVEN ...

he was a jinn, study arabic then come back to me
Behold! We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam": They bowed down except Iblis. He was one of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord. Will ye then take him and his progeny as protectors rather than Me? And they are enemies to you! Evil would be the exchange for the wrong-doers!
