Cristal is overpriced and Dom is getting that way. Try a smaller producer (eg. Gosset, Montaudon, or a personal favourite of mine, de Venoge) and you can find some real gems (Sainsbury's own brand Premier Cru is stunning, though). If it's your 40th, you have the bonus of being born in a fairly good year for the Chardonnays in Champagne if you fancy splashing out on a vintage. A 1966 Dom will set you back about £350, or I could sell you a magnum of Krug '66 for in the region of £2000.

I have a very expensive Champagne from France. My Dutch friends live in France and brought me a bottle for a gift when they visited me in The Netherlands. This Champagne has to be placed in the frigerator served cold before serving the bottle also has to be put in a cooler with ice blocks. The name is :
Cave de Martailly ( Rose` )
Brut 11,5% vol. 75cl.
Vin Mousseux de Qualite`

HAHA! Good question, I love a drink. The best champagne I could advise you to drink would be a 2KG Krug Clos du Mesnil 1992 for only £408.
Otherwise a Dom Pérignon Vintage 1998.for £50 for a 2KG bottle.

If money isn't the question, try a Dom Perignon 1962, 1966, or 1985. It's like you're drinking a perfume. I tried many other famous brands like Boringer RD, Pol Roger, Moet Chanton, but none match Dom Perignon. They almost best out in every year. I think few Champaign has a vintage on its label, Dom is one among them.

Clichot is wonderful but we've recently been drinking quite a bit of Prosecco, which is not champagne, but sparkling wine. I like it better than even the gold label Clichot and it is certainly much, much less expensive. A bit sweet so I think you would like it.

Your 40th calls for something special; Dom Perignon!

But if you're on more of a Franzia-type budget, I'd suggest a standard Brut. Otherwise a lady can never go wrong with a nice white zinfandel.

One of the poshest one is called "Moncuq" (pronouce mon cul, which means "my a..." I am not kidding). The most famous and good one is "Moët et Chandon" (je suis française, I know what I am talking about). Or the best may be the one, Steed, emma and Tara drank in the Avengers...

Vintages are far superior to non-vintages, and seeing as it's the Big Four-O you should really go for one.

Other than that, Lanson is my favourite, and they do at least two rosés, the standard one (Rosé Label, I think it's called) and a special Noble Cuvée Rosé. Both are brut (dry), though.

If you prefer a demi-sec (med.sweet), theirs is called Ivory Label.
