You are right, chocolate can't be handled by the digestive system of a dog. I've read here in a German Magazine, that chocolate may cause seriously toxication to a dog!

The darker the chocolate the more harmful it is to dogs. Milk chocolate will cause diarrhea in dogs. But it won't kill them like baker's chocolate or dark chocolate. The people that feed their dogs chocolate are just asking for trouble.
If someone's dog eats a bag of chocolate and calls us right after wards, we tell them to make the dog throw up using peroxide. And with Halloween coming up we will start to get these phone calls.

Dogs do love chocolate, and most will take it if offered, but yes - chocolate is poisonous to dogs.

A small amount you might get away with, depending on the amount they have and the size of dog - also you might get away with it if the dog throws it up and therefore less is in its system.

Raisins and raw onion are also poisonous to dogs.

It is possible to get special dog chocolate for them though, which is safe.

Chocolate can be delicious for dogs as well but can be very dangerous and sometimes mortal. See, a dog eating chocolate could affect his appetite causing some other problems, like obesity and probably mellitus diabetes. Too much chocolate can produce diarrhea... and something kill a dog. Chocolate contains Caffeine derivatives to which dogs don't react well. It affects their heart rate, lungs and nervous systems.

My black labrador ate choccie and lived to a very grand old age, it didn't do him any harm or any of our other dogs since, if choccie is so harmful surely there would be plenty of ill dogs about where you have ate a chocolate bar, cake etc and pieces of it have fallen to the floor and your pet has dived in there and eaten it before you have a chance to pick it up, magnum choco/icecream bars are one such example, personally I think it is vets being alittle bit over cautious to prehaps encourage people to keep there dogs on a healthier dog-food only diet, there is no dispute that if you gave your dog alot of it day in and day out it may make your pet poorly but won't neccessarily kill them.

Yes especially dark (plain) chocolate. All chocolate contains Theobromine but dark chocolate contains 9 times more than milk chocolate

Theobromine is poisonous for dogs but a 20lb dog would have to eat about 2lbs for it to be fatal. Best to buy dog choc drops

Dogs can't handle chocolate. Their digestive systems can't break the ingrediants down properly.

Yes it's seriously harmful, something in the actual cocoa of chocolate is poisonous to them. Having said that, don't immediately FREAK if your dog eats something. Just watch and get them to the vet if they have symptoms, like breathing hard, or drowsiness or just general weirdness
