It entirely depends on what you're looking for I spent ages trawling through and phoning every pet shop in a 50mile radius to try and get a 6ft training lead, but that was a while ago and i did eventually get one on ebay, now my dogs are in plain soft leather collar and leads. I wouldnt use an extending lead if you paid me, even though my 2 are well behaved. I witnessed a very disturbing accident a few years ago outside my home, where a young dog bolted across the road in one of those and was killed.

I think it's good to have a big variety of leashes and collars so that you can find just the right one that will suit your dog. I use a pinch collar on my husky/chow/pit mix b/c he'll pull 'til he's on his hind legs if I don't. And for my black lab, I just use a regular thin puppy leash and I loop it around her neck. It works fine for her, and doesn't choke her if I use it a certain way.

To Piggrumpy: Those 20-25 ft leashes are for training. I have one, myself that's 30 or 35 ft long, but I only use it for training. It's not /supposed/ to be used to keep your dog tied up outside. That's what it sounds like your neighbors are doing...

I think that dog owners have a very wide selction of collars as well as leads. BUT I myself do not like these 20 or 25 foot leads that are out there. I see NO purpose to them EXCEPT that the dog owner can allow his/her dog further out of his/her control and also allowing the dog to come into MY yard/property so their dog can take a dump. And NO I do not have a hatred for dogs as I myself have FIVE dogs I own. Did I answer your question.?

Everyone has different wants and needs in a leash.
It is very nice to have a choice.
Some however should not be used with certain dogs.
I hate those flexi leads that retract they are not for leash walking you have no contorl over the dog when it is out htat far on the leash and with a pushy assertive dog it makes them harder to walk. It encourages ppor leash behavior and I recommend my clients do not use this type of leash. Unless they have a very calm dog who does not have any behavior issues.

I have 2 Cocker Spaniels and we use a harness instead of a collar because it is bad for their throat and neck when they pull on a collar while walking. We also use a retractable leash that lets the dogs go at their own pace, but still gives us control.

I use the martingale collars on all five of mine and I suggest it to all of my adopter. Regular collars AND Harnesses are to easy for many dogs to get out of. The choke chain chokes I don't want to choke them either. Martingale has been used for years for grey hounds and now people are seeing the true benefit to all the dogs for the human collar.
