It is the British way to a large extent to not show any emotion - even happiness or general content. I also think mad people have given smiling a "bad name" by smiling in a crazy fashion - no-one wants to be thought of as crazy! Perhaps it would help if people could enjoy being on the tube - which is normally crowded and uncomfortable - or be looking forward to going to work - unlikely!

If they smile, a guff of morning breath comes out and everyone goes "eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww Breath!"

Really though, they should start talking, especially in this day and age. People need to be aware of what is going on around them.

Smile at them. See what reaction you get. I like to see the shock on people's faces when I say "hi" and smile.

Its a LONDON THING.

Get on the tube with me, I love my life and have a smile on my face when i'm off somewhere. Alack the people you see are not as light hearted as i and may have had a tiff with a lover or don't like their job or just lost a family member or friend, who knows. Just be greatful you are not one of the glums, and let them be.

Most people on the tube are stupid and travel for about 6 hours every morning on the tube, thats why! And it's cramped tuffy smelly and thinking about work and coming back home for 6 hours!
Glad i don't have to!
i work from home!

being crammed in a small space with complete strangers, some of which smell really bad is hardly something to smile about. However if someone was to give me a smile, i would of course smile back. Smiling is infectious. Try it

If u smile first then I find people usually smile back, or they just think ur some creepy guy and hold their bags even tighter!

Either way they still make some interaction with u!

I think it is hard to be happy when you are on the way to work still tired and crammed onto a tube like sardines while some perv is rubbing up against you touching your butt or worse leaning on your boobs

It all depends on how they did get out of their beds. Most of the time I notice people that didn't even wash themselves or brush their teeth and are breathing in your face. yikes!! It doesn't make me smile, what if it makes them want to talk to you and get more smelly breath in your face. Besides that being with so many people in that confined space, freaks me out to, why are there so many people, what if something happens, you won't get out fast. Another reason not making me want to smile.

because we live in a moody horrid place where no one really enjoys going to work or going out the way for others. We are all to some extent pretty self absorbed.
