My advice? Decorate the house and stay home. Travel after the first of the year when prices go down.

If you must travel over Christmas, start making your reservations now. If you are flying, try booking a flight/hotel package, which is usually cheaper. Also a lot of hotels have deals where your kids can stay free.

If there is some attraction reasonably close to your home, consider going there. Or if you have family that lives in some vacation spot whom you get along with and they are willing to put you up, go there -- but bring nice gifts to show your gratitude.

I personally gave up on holiday travel after I got stuck in the Cincinnati airport for two days right before Christmas in 2004. I finally made it back home at 2 a.m. on Christmas Eve. I never did get to my intended destination. Never, ever again. But I digress.

The Canaries are your best bet if you're after chasing the winter sun - you can get some good package deals with free kids places. Not too far to fly and guaranteed lovely warm weather!

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are my favourites. The Barcelo Fuerteventura Hotel is great for family holidays. Lovely new, friendly hotel, loads for the kids to do, great location and right on a safe, sandy beach.

It depends very much on where you are to start with and what your budget is. If you're in the UK you can get great flights on easyjet and ryanair and thompson fly. I saw some really cheap flights to Salzburg on thompsonfly. It'll be cold but really pretty. There's some great scenery and lots of chocolate for the kids...

If you are looking for sunshine Tenerife can offer the best of both worlds. Sunhine and traditional trimmings all in one. Self catering is inexpensive and the flights if booked with some effort can be very cheap.

I would recommend Northern Cyprus or Turkey. BUT, as both of these places are officially Muslim, I don't know how christmassy it will be if you were looking for a place to stay that would be celebrating it!
