I'm 5'10, 162 pounds. I've never really been fat, and I have recently lost some weight, but I'm wondering what kind of exercise regimen I should do to just make me look more lean. I was thinking mostly running, situps/crunches and sit ups, but I have no clue about how long or how many reps would be most effective. Right now I don't really have much muscle definition, so that's the primary thing I want to remedy. The timescale I'm looking at is between 4-9 months. Anything serious is appreciated.

Normally the key to muscle tone, lean muscle mass and strength without getting bulky or "muscle bound" has been more rep with less weight. What weight, depends on your current development. Start out light so you don't tear anything. And forget about that "feel the burn" BS...that's if you want bulky, OK? If you do get injured...heal before you resume.

I started lifting at age 14 and was also 5' 10" and about 147. I started out (and this was a long time ago...with about 125lbs on the bench and 12-15 reps. I eventually got to 6 foot 180lbs my senior year in HS and benched 275 ....once. I worked out with 225 at 10 -12 reps. Today I still work out but to stay lean and toned. In addition to running I am back to the original routine at about 150lbs and 8-10 reps....always 4 sets, then and now. Today I am still 6 foot of course and 178lbs...3 pounds more than when I graduated college.

Go slow, take it easy and don't injure yourself. Again, this was my plan and worked for me. Listen to the other advice you'll get and talk to one or more off your coaches...I am assuming you are in HS. But the same goes if you are in college.

Good luck and don't forget to eat a balanced diet.

Listen: you need to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. The 45 minute thing is not true, but don't over 60 minutes at a time.

Do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Good luck and stick at it.

Definately continue with the Running and Core excersizes they are absolute must. you should probably consult a nutritionist just to see where you stand as far as your diet goes. What it sound like overall is you would like to have more muscles so that you can acheive the more cut look. Work on you shoulders to add width to your self, work on your back to achive thickness, Always work on your chest for overall shape, and make sure to train your legs as well or you'll look dumb. You best bet would be to have a personal trainer train you for a while and then you'll have a better idea on how to control your body.

Lots of running is good. If you're looking into doing weights, it is said that high rep of moderate or light weight is more beneficial towards looking lean than low reps of heavy weights.
