If it's old fashioned oats, not the quick cook kind, this is how I do it:

Get a pot, throw 1 1/3 cups water into it
Throw 1/3 cup oats into water, add pinch of salt
Bring water to boil, lower to simmer, let simmer until water is gone and there, you have porridge.
Then stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, raisins, nutmeg...something to give it some flavour
Top with a bit of milk and that's it!

Maybe make some tea as well, to go with that. You'd better know how to do that!

Good luck, you are very nice to do this for your mum :-)

My favourite is to use non-quick oats as a start, but if thats all you have then so be it.

Put on a small saucpan, med heat and let it warm a little - not red hot, just moderately hot. Then place a handful and a half per portion of oats into the hot pan and let them brown for about 30 seconds - that way they have a nice toasty flavour.

Then put in enough water to cover them by about 1 cm, don't drown them! Let this sit for about 30 seconds, turn heat to low (it should start bubbling nicely) then stir every 20-30 seconds until they get a porrige consistency - around 2-4 minutes.

put in a bowl, add a dollop of greek yoghurt and a swizzle of honey and enjoy.

How To Cook Porridge

1 part oats (the proper stuff, not quick-cook rubbish)
2 parts liquid (water, milk or a combination of both)
Salt to taste, but not much (say, max 1/2 tsp to pint of water)

Place all in a pan and bring to boil while stirring every now and then. Once it starts boiling, reduce heat to simmer (ie. lowest setting) and cook for at least 10 mins; it gets better the longer you cook it, so continue for 20-30 mins if you have the time. If it seems to get too thick just add a drop of water to suit your likes.

Delicious, healthy and cheap - more than you can say for most foods!

One cup of Porridge Oates, one cup of water and one cup of milk. Add to saucepan and bring to boil stirring occasionally. When boiling temperature reached turn down the heat and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
Serve into bowels, pour a little cold milk on top (about a tasblespoon) and add a little honey just drizzeled over the top.
This is enough for 2 servings.

Dont burn yourself as the porridge is really hot!

1. Put a cup of rolled oats in the pot
2. Mix to a paste with cold water
3. Add a large cup of hot, boiled water and a pinch of salt. Stir with a wooden spoon.
4. Put the pot on the stove.
5. Cook gently stirring regularly. Don't let it boil over.
6. When it's creamy serve it up.

Happy Breakfast!

Put a cup of oats in a small saucepan with 1 cups water and 1 cup milk, bring to the boil stirring all the time. If it looks dry add more milk. Serve with honey or syrup or pieces of fruit on top., yummy and good for her!

Without milk? do you mean with water?
This is how I do mine, but this is with milk. I put half a cup of oats in a bowl, top it up with milk, then leave it in the fridge overnight. Then put it in the microwave for about 3 mins. ( give it a little stir after about a minute or so ) Leaving the oats in the milk overnight makes it really creamy.
