many sir names have had spelling changes over the years. Many of our forefathers wrote phonetically, as it sounded to them. It is quite common. Also some could not read or write and someone else, their boss for example would just write it the way he thought proper. Example- Bolling, Boling, Bolen.

no clues but i guess they must be a part of some rebelious generation who wanted to spell their name a little differently.hence they added a w.
