Because their habits will become your habits. I barely hang out with my two best friends anymore because all they like to do is drink when they get off work. I eat very healthy, workout, and only drink on special occassions.

Peers can affect you health in many ways.
1) Encouraging good or bad eating habits. ("Have one more beer with us, thats only 12 so far!")
2)Mental health is greatly influenced by our peers.
We need a healthy balance of good experiences. If you are constantly berated all day, your self esteam goes down, and that can lead to self hate and depression.
3)Laughter is said to be the best medicine. There is a bit to this. I find I am more alert and energetic when Im in a good mood, so all the proccesses fire the way they should.
4)Spread of disease. Well if you hang around with the leprosy crowd, or the VD crowd, watch out for catching something :)

yes I totally believe that the people around you & their attitudes & moods can effect you over all health & well being....like if the people around you regularly are depressing & negative it causes you to feel their negativity & in my own experience it effects my over all mood & causes it to be less happy, hence I dont feel as good and over a period of time constant negativity takes a toll on the mind & body
not to mention if you let them your pers can talk you into doing things like drinking too much, doing drugs, ya know peeer pressure stuff.....
