It simply means that we're all living longer. Our life expectancy is longer than our parents and grandparents.

Family life has changed, most couples that get married or get together are having children at a older age than generation before about 30 plus the modern family number of off spring are lower on average 2 kid per family opposed to plus 5 for past generations.

The affect of less children been born is creating an aging population, this will have a greater problem when the 1960's baby boomer reach retirement around 2030's. With less younger people in the work force who will pays the pensions.

Brits tend to live longer, especially if they have given up cigs,
at the same time people (except the young mum in Little Britain)
are delaying childbearing and the average family size is now less then 2 children per family. Many young people go overseas during gap year and some of them stay in places such as Australia and dont come back.
This means that the ratio of old versus young is changing. There was also the delayed efect of World War one when hundred of thousands of young men were killed. After the second World War there was a baby boom 1946-1950 and these people are now becoming retirees.

It usually refers to the average age of the people in a city/country etc. to be moving towards the higher side.
Such a place has problems like higher expenditure on healthcare, insurance, pensions etc.
Also they lack people to work in factories, military etc.. basically all workplaces needing abundance of strong, young people
Such people are also often termed conservative, and so retail industry suffers in such areas..
However, usually, industries needing high skillsets are not too impacted in such cases.
Usually, the Govt then tries to encourage people to have more children to offset such a trend, since, the ideal balance is to have a proportionate representation of all age groups!

Less job prospects for the aged.

Alot of industries these days choose to take young fresh school leavers because of cheap labour, leaving older people with a lesser chance of getting into employment.

It means that we have a ticking time bomb. People are living longer (more drain on pensions and NHS), and people are having fewer babies (less income coming on line when the kids are of working age). Which means that either we all have to work until we drop dead or we accept immigrants to this country (wherever they are from) who are going to have children who will pay taxes and work to care for us as we get older. if we don't the country will keel over and die. Simple really!

It means that people are generally living longer, for example, we have more 100+ year olds than ever before and so a bigger portion of the population consists of older people than ever before. Try this link for more information
