A friend has warned me that drinking fizzy water is rather bad for your health, and we should only be drinking still water? Is this true? To me, water is water but is the added carbonation something that we should avoid?

you are correct my friend, water is water, the carbonation process is harmless and contains zero calories,so is perfectly safe and healthy,
however some of the flavoured or slightly flavoured varities do contain dye and sugars and obviously they are not as healthy for you.
enjoy your water,"me im off for a beer" lol

I think it is personal choice, but I do not like Fizzy Water from the added carbonation.

fizzy water may be beneficial if you are feeling a bit bloated or lets say, need a good burp !!

generally you should drink still water - about 8 glasses a day - because it is in its most natural form. 70% of our body is water. and we loose a lot of water everyday from our system so we need to keep replacing it. still water is the best to do this.

fizzy water may also erode your enamel in your teeth.

also i have noticed that ppl who drink fizzy water everyday, get a bit too used to it - in other words - their digestion doesnt go right if they dont drink fizzy water

so i avoid it anyway !

well still water's better for you because there's no carbonate in it. The reason why fizzy water as well as any fizzy drink as yummy as they can be are not good for you in the long run is that they corrode your bones and make them weaker not withstanding in later years.

Fizzy water's good for stomach upset.

Still water i think tastes better but that's my preference.

Still is better!
Carbonation has both benefits and risk to human health.

Carbonation is known to kill bacteria that may cause infection.
You may choose carbonated water if you are traveling in a foreign
country to prevent a negative reaction to the country’s bacteria.

Hmm.. No.. do no longer drink fizzy water this is as undesirable as the different gentle drink obtainable (no longer likely :P). besides, my advice to you is to alter the temperature of the water. test slightly! maybe warm water won't make you sense ill! or maybe your treatment is chilly iced water relatively! basically attempt that, better of success...
