I have heard of this weight-loss trick but thought it sounded really out there. A friend wants to try it. Supposedly the woman is induced into lactating and then she donates the milk for premature born babies in neonatal. A worthy cause in my opinion. Ever heard of this or know how many calories?

breastfeeding DOES burn calories...your body is making the breastmilk and that takes energy. a person does not have to move to create and burn off energy, you do it while you are sleeping. i don't know what book said there has to be movement that a person can SEE to burn calories, but wherever it is show me so i can call the author an idiot. i too wish that people would get the facts straight before they tell others to get them straight.

i lost 10 lbs a month breastfeeding my daughter, by the end of my 6 month breastfeeding time, i lost about 40 pounds. you burn between 200 and 500 calories a day breastfeeding, depending on how much the baby eats. on average i'd say 250. i know i burned more than 250 because i lost weight rapidly and my daughter ate constantly. while i was in the hospital i was told to eat double servings of dessert because i would need the extra 300 calories or so to produce a day's milk...so i will say that breastfeeding on average burns 300 calories per day.

i don't think that people sell breastmilk anymore, perhaps they do. however i am sure that people can be induced into lactating. there are even medications that people can take to begin producing breastmilk.

Breastfeeding can help you shed your excess weight while eating your regular diet. Producing milk uses 200 to 500 calories a day, on average. That may not sound like much, but it equals the calories burned running a couple miles a day or doing 30 laps in the pool.

Up to 500 calories a day! Here, read this:

"Not only is breastfeeding better for the baby, however, research also says it's better for the mother. Among potential benefits to mothers: 500 more calories burned per day, possibly leading to quicker weight loss; stimulation of the hormone oxytocin, potentially leading to less postpartum bleeding; (if breastfeeding is long-term) possibly lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer; recalcification of bone during the weaning process, possibly leading to stronger bones; and a possible reduced risk of rheumatoid arthritis."

Also, for the future, calorie-count.com is an awesome website for how many calories are burned for different activities (names a ton!) and also a HUGE database on how many calories/grams of fat/carbs are in what foods, including restaurants.

You burn approximately 500 energy according to day, yet no longer all ladies decrease weight. My mom keeps telling me that she did no longer decrease weight whilst she did breastfeeding and ended up having to exercising to do away along with her infant weight. i think of that it basically relies upon on how lots you breastfeed and each thing which you consume.

most places don't do breast milk sharing anymore. There are so many nasty things that can be passed on. Anything from HIV to last nights aspirin tablet can be passed on to the baby.

Wow, what a load of misinformation.

If people are going to answer questions about stuff like this then they should KNOW the answers first.

To burn calories you need to have some type of movement, as far as I know, breastfeeding isn't something that has you moving around a lot outside of positioning and shifting your weight. Most of the websites that are saying that you burn calories while breastfeeding are pro-breastfeeding sites that are doing what ever it takes to get women to "do it". While you are technically "losing weight" while breastfeeding – that weight is the actual milk that is being secreted. So when the glands start producing more, you are back to square one.

As far as donating breast milk, I don't know of many places that will accept donation even after screening is done because while there are benefits to breast milk over formula, it is a time consuming process that costs upwards of ten times what it would be to open or make formula from powder.
