I love this one. my mom is a hippie still. hippies were people that were earth people. they wanted a simple life in tune with nature and the earth sky and stars. they eat what they grow. and there clothes were what they make most of them.. most people think of them as drug up people. but in truth the first hippies were not in to that they wanted there body's to be health. in Many ways i love the life they had. I try to do a lot of it now. but i still believe in work and making money so i can buy stuff.

If you're going to truly define a hippy, then they would be old.. True hippies should be atleast 40.. having been a teenager in the 60's or 70's ... who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc.

Their intentions were good but ridiculously optimistic about the human condition. I think most were misguided, clueless middle-class kids, in the end, the only things they loved and cared about were themselves. I recently saw a UK TV programme about a street in south London that was famous for it's squatter residents. They interviewed a lot of them as they are now and most of the interviews took place in what looked like rather grand houses, one even had a swimming pool behind him! I don't know for sure that it was his but you'd think he'd have been a bit more protective of his hippy cred! Like punks, there aren't any real hippies any more, it's more of a throw away fashion fad now. Most youth cultures have now been commodified so much that society has absorbed them to the point of no return.

My boyfriend thinks the hippies have all this protest in them and got nothing done. I think he is correct all they did was complain and now they are in corporate America. They are still smoking pot that is how you can tell them. They have no backbone. They are bad to the environment, but shop at the natural market. They are hypocrites. They drive a SUV and then have slogans on the back of it. They are hypocrites that is how you know them. Look for the old pot smokers who are hypocrites. They are the people that hated their parents in the 60s, but are their parents now.
They hated materialism then by they are really materialistic now, but still are stoned. They are really stupid sorry. Do you see those people walking around with no back bone with the SUV in their 60s? That is them. They smoke pot, destroy the envrioment and say they are good and stand for something. They are hypocrites.
Look for the environmental slogans on the SUV.

Ever seen the episode of Southpark where the hippies invade the town and it's up to Cartman to save the town by playing Metallica over the loudspeakers?
Matt Stone and Trey Parker pretty much nailed it with that episode.

A hippee, as according to _illyanna
hippee, (hip EE') n. adj. 1. a person belonging to the social political movement of the late 50's through the early 70's, consisting of the tenants of free thought and awareness of the world around them 2. a person of the hippee movement of the late 50's and early 70's that once said they would never sell out their thoughts or beliefs or even country but eventually succumb to the passions of greed, most of which now carry platnium cards and more debt that the nation as they embrace captialism and segments of socialism and communism in different formats, currently living advanced newer homes and soon approaching middle and older age when they might reenvision a new world of sight seeing and attempting to ressurect their old freethought lifestyle while paying for McDonald's from their Winnebago with credit cards. Hippees in this definition also are responsible for the continued support of societies malginancy that they once detested such as, but not limiting to, business men must have short hair and thusly ending their carefree idealism and becoming what they have sought their whole life to end as they attempt to impose their ideals of how their envisioned nation and society should appear that eventually fade to capitalism and iron handed strategies upon the rest of mainstream society feeling secure within their limted scope of Homeland Protection.

They stink, their house is messy, smells like pot and weird decorative stuff and weed pipes lie everywhere, their hair long, ugly, not washed, not shiny and stringy, if they are guys they wear tight jeans and weirdly dyed tees and girls wear baggy flowery dresses and ugly hats.
They think they are happy and positive all the time but I think it's just a delusion. I'm so glad I wasn't born in the sixties.
