I installed the codec on my machine the next thing I got were lots of pop up windows informing me that I had lots of spyware on my machine! I also had a notification icon in the system tray that could not be removed! It would tell me to install software and sent to a website to purchase it.

DO NOT INSTALL THIS AS AVG AND WINDOWS DEFENDER CANNOT REMOVE THE SPYWARE FROM THE COMPUTER. Even if you add/remove programs the computer is still infected.

Does anyone know how I can inform Microsoft about this? Maybe they need to update Windows Defender.

you can go to microsofts site www.microsoft.com and click on the contact tab or look on their site for a contact number at milton keynes.
this (pcodec) is a malware tool that is sent out over the internet at a number of sites and you are right when you say it is difficult to remove, you need to click on my computer , click on programme files and it should be there in a file marked pcodec try and remove it that way or, go to start click search and at the search panel type in pcodec then search ,click on the name pcodec delete and ok this should get rid of most of the operational files if this fails contact one of the many good pc doctors on line, this company is being looked into at this very moment. if all else fails you may have to reboot
