There are several different kinds of tick fever, and yes, humans can certain kinds of tick fever. Here are a few kinds:

-Ehrlichiosis
-Basesiosis
-Lymes
-Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF)

The symptoms of tick fever are endless, and can vary with the kind of tick fever you are talking about. You can read them at this site:

The best way to prevent any kind of tick fever is to keep ticks off your dog. Frontline and K9 Advantix topicals are great at keeping ticks and fleas off, and the Preventic collar will prevent ticks only. (Note: Revolution is mainly for heartworm and mange prevention, it won't prevent ticks very effectively.) You can also take your dog to the vet and ask about getting the Lymes vaccine for him/her if you live in a high-risk area. (The vet should be able to tell you if you do live in a high-risk area or not.)

Tick bite fever both animals and humans can get it, is is caused by an infected tick biting you, you are more prone to getting bitten if you live on a farm or in a tick infested area, the symptoms are the same as that for flu and you need an antibiotic to clear it, and it is not like other illnesses once you get it you can and will get it again and again depending on wether you get bitten again, tick bite fever or otherwise known as Billary can kill animals and if not treated it can kill humans as well

I think it's called Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and you get sick as a merf. It is super rare, and the only way to prevent it is to stay away from long grass.
