You have to be more aware that you are doing it & correct yourself, actually tell yourself to stop. Carry a file & clippers so when you get a tear or rough edge you can fix it & not have to bite it. If you do dishes by hand or have your hands in water alot run cold water over them & use a moisture rich lotion on & under the nail or where cleaning gloves. Also you can use a clear nail polish on & under the nail to protect them. I use to have the same problem , follow these steps & soon you will have long pretty nails.

The only way to quit a bad habit is to replace it with a good one.Figure out when and why you do it,then you can think of an appropriate replacement. My grandaughter carried a small notebook and pen at all times when she found herself starting to chew she pulled them out and started writing what she was feeling. She used other tools at the same time to make her more aware, like long press-on nails etc. It took about 6 weeks to quit and another couple of months for her nails to grow out but she now has lovely hands. Good luck.

Punch yourself in the chin everytime you find yourself biting your nails. Or go to a science lab and run swab under your nails put it in a petrie dish close the dish and comeback in 7-10 days. You will then see what you are putting in your mouth. Both are quite effective.

I keep polishing mine, then picking at the polish, then taking the polish off and putting it back on. It is the only thing that keeps me from biting or picking at the fingernails themselves.
