In a long term relationship, what can the phrase "I think we should take a break" mean? Do people ever really think they just need time? Especially in a long term relationship, where it would seem like they should know the person pretty well at that point. It seems to me that by the time they've asked to take a break, the break has already been taken. It may seem that specific situations are important, but if someone asks to take a break isn't what's really being said is that they don't want you around for whatever the reason is, and if it is a long term relationship - that is basically saying they dont want you, period?
What do you think. Have you ever asked to have a break? Have you ever been told that you should take a break from your relationship?
Thanks for the answers!

I am going through exactly this in my relationship. My girlfriend and I took a "break" about three months ago and we hardly keep in touch since that time. I foresee the end very shortly and the sad part is, I think this is what she wanted in the first place.
She says "I am stressed to the max with our relationship". To me this means, she doesn't need the hassle any more. I think the "break" was an excuse to let me down easy, but this "taking a break" stuff is just excruciating.
Anyway, that is my perspective on it. Best of luck to you.

fortuitously, no, they have not. i be attentive to that i'm a sinner saved by making use of the mercy of God and the atoning dying of Christ. i do no longer want some laugh-headed "quiz" to tell me what I already discovered an prolonged time in the past. I additionally be attentive to that i do no longer now, nor have I ever suffered a unethical individual gladly. And so some distance as i'm in touch, anybody who makes use of guilt to control others into an emotional "conversion" is as cheating as they arrive.

it is good to ask if this is really a break or if this is a nice way to say that they really want to "break up" Ask them to be honest with you. If you are asking for a break, be SUPER explicit that it is what you mean, some time alone. Otherwise they are going to think that you never want to see them again.

Brakes in relationships happen. It is possible to live happily thereafter. However, I'venever seen/heard of people asking it, discussing it and happily getting together afterwards. I have only heard of someone storming off but coming back a year later.

Taking a break is a way of telling someone that they dont wnt to see you anymore and most likely wont want to ever again.
