Yes, and you have to mean it in your heart. Also if you sin on the intention of thinking that you just have to pray, just know that God knows your heart and you can't trick God.

Pray for forgiveness of your sins and for the grace to not commit the same sin again.

If you are Catholic, Go to confession. I am Catholic and I love the sacrament of Reconciliation as it is now called. After going to confession I feel like I can float on air. When I walked in I felt burdened and heavy.

You tell God that you acknowledge your sin - (believing that what you did was wrong). Then you ask Him to forgive you - (knowing that He will, He is a loving God.) Then you repent - which means you turn away from that sin, promising not to do it again.
God knows your heart - you don't need fancy words or special formulas. Just talk to Him.

Pray TO Jehovah God but do it THROUGH his son Jesus. If you are aware of this, and still mess it up a bit, God will understand. But to pray to Jesus, thinking he is God himself, is not ACCURATE.
2 PETER 1; 2 May undeserved kindness and peace be increased to YOU by an accurate knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 forasmuch as his divine power has given us freely all the things that concern life and godly devotion, through the accurate knowledge of the one who called us through glory and virtue.
Noitice how the scripture clearly separates Jesus from his Father in heaven.

Repent with all your heart out of a motive of love of God.
Get a firm purpose not to do it again.
Confess your sins to God.
Trust in His everlasting mercy, and the Blood of Jesus.

If you're Catholic go to confession.

Pray this Prayer with sincere heart ...

"Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."
