If the parent lives near family hopefully one of them could be called in to care for the child...otherwise the parent takes a day off work.

Set up a support system for if the child is sick are there an emergency at school. If looking for new employment try to set things in writing at time of negotation to avoid problem later if possible. (for support daycare, babysitter, neighbors, relatives, friends) unless its extremely necessary to take time off. Thats why their is a family Leave Act with the labor board. see when that company starts theres for employees.

It is horrible when this happens. It depends on how sick the child is, if it is too sick to go to school, but well enough to come to work with you - then I would do that. Otherwise, if no relative could look after him/her, you just need to take the day off.
And how dare that person say about you being a single parent. It happens to couples too!

Check out your local hospitals or call the state human services department. There are several program in the south florida area that help single parents with sick children. You pay an arm and a leg but when you have to get to work...what can you do.

If your support system can't help you out, there are day-cares that are for sick children. You have to register ahead of time. They have nurses on duty and the children are segregated so as not to cross contaminate. It runs about $40 a day here. It is not cheap but it may be less than missing work.

Putting them with nanny is one of the best options. If your child is currently in a childcare, you have to remove him/her to prevent other kids from contracting it.
There are not much choice actually. Still the best is to take care of her/him yourself, to ensure they take plenty of water, and medication at the appropriate timing. Coz, I personally, still feel very paranoid in leaving them to others.
