I am a smoker, he isn't. He makes more money then I do and has me in a small place. He seems to have to run of the place because if I didn't agree to not smoke in the apartment he wouldn't stay. Now, I love his friendship and we are best friends, but the smoking thing is getting to us. How do I fix this and make both of happy?

If I had wanted someone to tell me to stop smoking I would have asked my mom this question.

I am very sure since you are best Friends he wants the best for you, so you need to do your part too by either trying to quit which i recommend or try not to bother him at least when he is around you , and I think you should tell him that you love his friendship and you need to something in return for this friendship to last, And I tell smoking could kill you, but friendship might last for ever so think of it , I wish great friendship and good health.

the smoking issue can be a touchy subject. you need to keep in mind that it does affect him, his health and his life. it is not something that should be forced on him. if you need to smoke at home then maybe you need to get another roommate that doesn't mind a smoker. i do sympathize with you. i smoked for years but never in my apartment because i didn't like how it made everything smell. i used to sit outside on the porch and smoke. i put the butts in an old coffee can so i didn't litter in the yard.

Live and let live. If you like to smoke, so be it. I think it's best if you smoke outside or like others have stated, smoke in your room with the windows open. If your roommate still disagree with this, it's time to move out or have him move out. It's a power struggle and if you give in, he will demand more from you later.
To me, it does not matter about who makes more money, you pay your shares and he pay his. You owe him nothing and he CAN NOT demand you to do anything. If you are willing to compromise and he will not, the fault lies on him.
Offer to not smoke in the apartment, but in your room or outside. He have the right to demand his fresh air but have no right to deprive you of your life style.

Well, he has to live there too and he shouldn't have to be around your smoking. You could move out or quit smoking. Or don't smoke at home. Your roommate shouldn't have to be exposed to your second hand smoke which could be hazardous to his health. If you love his friendship and care about him, you will respect him and not smoke there.

Is he a control freak? If you are sharing the rent and utilities I would think you have rights also! I can understand him not wanting you to smoke in the living room etc. but if you do it in your room with a window open it should be fine!. Tell him to lighten up. There are things that are much worse to your health than cig smoke. For instance: the air outside toxins in our food and water, Those are things you can't smell or see,but they are there! And tell him to be sure to wash his hands often!

Easy....quit
What he's asking isn't that bad of a thing. Before you go off on how hard it is i have quit things much worse then cigs. Why should he put his health on the line so you can get that small comfort. If you really must smoke go outside on the porch.

Quit smoking. You will live longer, stop being stinky, get less wrinkled and puckered up when you're older, save lots of money, feel better, taste your food better, enjoy physical activities more, and have no more problems with your roommate.
