What kind are they? If they are the small brown German roaches that you will see climbing walls, you are screwed. I hope you're on a month to month because it's best to put your furniture and electronics in storage, bomb everything, wait a month and move again. Nothing else will get rid of those things. Each one of those suckers drops like hundreds of eggs a week, they are tiny and fast as lightening and you can spray them with practically anything and they'll just run away.
The bigger roaches that don't climb walls are easier to get rid of and they breed slower. There are some great tips here just do a search. The Combat roach paste works great, also those little round discs they crawl into, eat stuff and go back to the nest. Also boric acid powder.
Their photos are here: the easiest ones to get rid of are probably the Oriental cockroach, the hardest the German. I hope you have the former. Good luck!!!

Throw away any opened food in the cupboards and put all other food in tightly tied up trash bags. Set off a couple of bug bombs, specifically for roaches, in your house and go away for as long as the directions on the label tells you. When you get back you'll of course have to wash all of your dishes and wipe down the cupboards and floors. But it will kill the little beggars. If the infestation is realllllllly bad you might be better off having an exterminator. You'll also want to warn you neighbors in the house what you're going to do because the little crawlies will run to places where the bug bomb is not traveling to. Chances are your house mates have them too they just haven't seen them yet or they don't want to admit they've got them. Probably the best thing to do is all of you bomb on the same day and drive them out of the house. Good luck with the nasty Little blighters.
One of the other answerers suggested the landlord have an exterminator in. That is an excellent idea; especially considering you just moved in. It's up to him (legally) to provide a clean place for you to move into. Do It.

There is a powder available with an awkward spelling. It's like
Roach Pruff or something. I have heard it works VERY well. Be sure to place it along the foundation outside, along baseboards behind the fridge, etc. If you have pets or children, place it WHERE THEY CANNOT GET INTO IT!!!!
Also, if I were you I would have an exterminator come out to spray outside for a few months. Roaches migrate. Just because you have them does not mean they were there from the last tenants. If there is bark chips (landscape material), roaches are suppose to really like that.
For the roach pruff, I suggest looking for it in a lawn & garden store.

#1 Boric Acid.
Roaches are attraced to water, so put it under sinks and anywhere that might get moist. Also, make sure you eliminate food and water that might be attracting them (put away pet food).
#2 Check your local laws-- this may be cause to break your lease.
If the problem is severe, it may be considered an unsafe environment, which is something every state says you are entitled to. But roach issues may or may not be viewed by a court as cause to break your lease. Always start these kinds of complaints with a verbal request, followed-up in writing. If the problem doesn't improve, send your landlord subsequent requests via certified mail. It sends a loud message that you feel this is serious and may be preparing for legal action.

It depends on where you live. In Florida, they have bugs that you cannot get permanently removed.
Not so in Michigan. I had an apartment such as yours. I was given some white powder to put around the place (away from children of course). I do not know the name of it but just look in hardware or department stores for a powdery bug killer. The bugs get the stuff on their feet and carry it back to the nest. The babies hatch and they are done just as the parents. Sounds cruel. The others in the apartment house did not use this and kept their bugs. You can rid your apartment even if your neighbor does not.

It's most likely not just you...are the other apartments not connected to you? That's the only way I could see that you're the only one infested. Tell the landlord and have them hire an exterminator to bomb not just your apartment but everything. If not, they just move next door until the fumes die down. Remember, for every roach you see there are a TON where you can't see. *shudder* ewww, hate 'em. Good luck to you, roaches are the worst. :(

First you want to get you a good spray like beangle or black flag and spray your upper part of your cabinets and under your sink and the base boards. Then get some boric acid at wal mart put in a bottle that you can spray it out like in a dust cloud and spray light dust film in your cabinets and in any cracks and crevices that you see. Forcing that powder in them holes and then get you some caulking and seal up all the cracks and around all your pipes and drain pipes and you heard this from a pest eliminator ... not pest control but a pest eliminator.

you must must must get in a specialist pest control guy to come and spray your house. No off-the-shelf spray will stop your home being roach infested trust me. If you live in a city you will always come across the occassional bug, its inevitable. Meantime get the roach-squad in...and good luck!

Exterminator, should be your land lord's responsibility. This will take a couple treatments though. For every 1 cockroach you see there is a 100 more. I feel for ya, ewww gross, nasty things.

The landlord should call someone to come and spray to get rid of them. You could also buy a can of bug spray. It should help.
