So far I went to one store and they told me I could only use 6X8 in all 4 doors. I have no idea how that would sound; doesn't sound like much bass power.

I know all about these trucks, so let me make a suggestion:

If you really care about sound, want to keep this truck and enjoy the ride for a long while, then go with a new head unit stereo with 3 RCA preouts (a pair for front channel amp, a pair for rear channel amp and a pair for the sub amp). Alpine, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, whatever u like. Get one with an iPOD ready and satellite ready options.

Get 4 speakers 6X8's or 5X7's, but a decent brand like Infinity, Alpine, JBL or the Higher end Pioneer.

You can fit a sub woofer under the rear seat in a single 10" box that is stealth and not in the way. The box will take about half of the width of the seat, the other half will still hold the jack and stuff.

For Sub + Amp, it would be nice to get JL Audio 10W3v3 (just came out) and a JL e1400D or a1400D single channel amplifier (400 watts clean) to drive the sub.

If you noticed, I recommended a stereo with 3 RCA preouts because just in case you wanted the 4 speakers to sound much louder, you can add another amp (4channel) to drive the speakers.

If you do not mind spending around $1000 to $1200 for this setup, then boy, u will get a system that will impress the heck outta ya!

I realize you like the stock head unit, but remember that the sound quality is only going to be as good as that head unit can allow, it will definately be your weakest link. With that said, look around for some JBL, alpine, or blaupunkt speakers. You don't want anything too crazy for your 6x8's so that your stock head unit can still move them (in otherwords, don't go hunting around for something with giant magnets thinking you're going to get better sound. You want efficiency) As for the sub, go with a bazooka or the like. They are reasonably priced, sound great, are easy to install AND remove if you need to, and everything is in one nice neet little package. Enjoy.

i have a 2001, all the speakers should be 5x7 replace those, dont get anything cheap spend some good money, remove all the stock garbage, and put in a good head unit, alpine, pioneer, panasonic, it is all very easy, if you are handy, go to crutchfield and order everything, talk to a person they are very good and helpful, and do it yourself, if you have questions go to a car audio specialist, not best but or some big box store, i did all my own car stereo installations and numerous friends its easy
