I don't know what kind of party you want to throw, but I have a great idea. Last summer we threw a 20th birthday party for my friend Christina and the theme was CEOs & Business Hos. It was so awesome, all of the dudes dressed up real classy and nice and all of the chicks dressed real slutty with work clothes (although they wouldn't wear it to work). Everybody had fun dressing up and participating in the theme party, thats why I am suggesting it to you.

A holiday or seasonal theme. LIke now could be, the last of summer party or the start of fall. The kids are back to school let's party. If there's a popular show everyone's watching, the Desperate Party goers or Survivor or American Idol. A film or sports event. "Let's wish Agassi happy retirement party" Well, that's it for me.

I recently made a party with a theme of 1960's Gangster. This would be a cool idea where everyone will dress up like a 60's gangster. Formal yet cool. One of my buddy dressed up like Al Capone with the over coat and was holding a tommy gun, the chicks were all after him.
I would reccomend you to find a 'rent a custome store' and clip the address with you invitation. With this your friends will know were to rent a 1960's costume and accesories.

People will like it, when you are dressed classic, it just takes you back to the past for one day.

Serve whisky, beer and wine. Put on jazz or italian techno....

For a simple theme--choose a color and have everyone come dressed in that color, all the decorations and food would be in that color as well. (Red or green would be easy, but with a little food coloring, blue would make it an interesting night.) Make a contest to choose the best dressed person or the person who prepares the most interesting food in that color. The prize should be something of that color as well.

"Around the world" party. Dress up, basically, as a stereotypical person from a different country or place in the world. Maybe that sounds lame but it was one of the more fun parties I've been too....I made a kilt and wore that, my friend dressed up rastafarian style with a dreadlock wig, etc.

If all else fails you can do something like Golf Pros and Tennis Hoes or...____ Pros and _____ Hoes (insert anything)

an ABC party (anything but clothes) it's really finny to see your friends in a burlap bag or a giant pirate flag.
