It is best to buy a working dog versus a dog bread just for show. The temperament is better for a working dog. Look for schutzhund in the background of the dog. This will be a great temperament dog that gives you a lot of protection and loyalty.
Down side, they shed a lot. I mean a lot. They are large dogs and can eat a lot too. They can climb out over fences and are very quick. We had two imported and trained G.S and loved them. They are now passed on.

The pros of owning a German Shepherd definetly out weigh the cons. They are very friendly and easy to train, they have a long memory. They are very protective of children and the home, and a great judge of character. They seem to have a sense of who can be a danger. German Shepherds love to play and excercise.
The only cons I can come up with is the shedding (they need to be brushed daily to keep it under control, but they don't mind). The other con is being such a large dog they will most likely have a hip displasure problem that will need to be corrected with surgery.

Pros:
For the most part, they are intelligent animals who learn quickly, and they are pretty much all purpose dogs. They can be very affectionate, and they are protective of their people. They're an ideal dog for search and rescue because of their high play drive and good scent matching abilities.
And this is purely subjective on my part, but they're great big mush puppies who love to give chin kissies and act like lap dogs. For an all round great dog, the Shepherd is my pick.
Cons:
They shed a lot. They also need much more human contact than a lot of people have time to give, or otherwise you can have behavioral problems. There are some irresponsible breeders who don't eliminate bad bloodlines. That can lead to an animal who's prone to health and temperament problems.
They are also active dogs who need space to run and exercise. And a bored German shepherd is a demo derby on four paws, let me tell you from sad experience.
All in all, though, the pros vastly outweigh the cons. I wouldn't trade the memories of time spent with my Sheps for the world.

hi, we have bred and trained german shepherds for years now and all i can advise is that if you have the time, the space, the commitment and the knowledge of the GSD then it will pay dividense
The GSD is a working breed they are naturally protective of their surroundings, and their family. However if you give them the oppropriate socialisation at a young age then they will become much more tolerant.
The only Cons of owning a GSD is when people (owners) do not know enough about the breed or if they cannot give the dog enough mental stimulation, They are highly intelligent and need that constant stimulation.

Cons: Big and energetic, they need lots of room to run and play. These are very active dogs and do best with lots of interaction and attention. Also they chew a lot. A whole lot. On anything, but mostly things they call theirs....which can be anything.
Pros: These dogs are so intelligent, they sometimes seem human. They are easy to teach and eager to learn. As mentioned above they really enjoy interaction and are always ready to play. German Shepards are fantastic guard dogs if properly trained, but are also gentle and loving dogs that are good with children by nature.

i loved my German Shepherd, he was loyal, great with our family (humans and other animals)
They do shed quite a bit and the biggest downside we had was the over protectiveness of the breed.
If you get a German Sheppherd I would suggest researching the best heredity lines as others have suggested and make sure they go through formal training and are socialized as much as possible,
also, anytime you have a breed that has the stigma of being "agressive" shepherds, pit bulls, dobermans etc, its best to not have ****** neighbors, that was my boy Apache's downfall

They will be hated if they are here illegally and don't get a Green Card. Also, if you don't teach them english, you'll never understand the bark.
