I have a stray male cat that crosses my backyard once in a while, and I hope to befriend it. I know that if you feed a stray dog a hot dog that the hot dog's smell stays on your hands and its smell causes the dog to follow you, so my question is how can I do that for a cat?

Leave out some cat food every day., lean over and make that swswswswss noise that they like and put your hand out. That would make him or her trust you. They come after me with that noise. And if they see you leaving food every day, eventually it will come over. The scnet of tuna would stay on your hands but I don't know that that alone would work.

Its very difficult to befriend a cat, much easier with a dog. It could take a long time. The best way is with food. just leave the food in your yard and over a period of weeks move it closer and closer to the house. You could leave something that smells like you near the food everynow and then. make some noise from in the house while the cat is around. just do whatever you can to get him use to you, your smell and your noises. and after lots of dedicated time and money he still may never get close to you. But at least you can feel good about feeding a starving stray cat. good luck.

I got as close to the cat as she would let me and dropped some cat food. When she would come up to eat, I would reach over and scratch her head. About six months later she started letting me pet her without food. I can even pick her up now. What you are trying to do could take a long time if the cat hasnt been around humans enough, but is well worth it. It takes lots of patience and LOTS of food.

Start leaving a bowl of food at your door go can one day and dry the next, slightly leave the door open and move a little closer, each day open the door more and get a little closer, usually cats arn't that affraid of people if he is nice, if he has had a bad past then it might take a little longer, but you need to be prepared to be the owner of the cat. You just can't feed it and not claim it.

Sit outside with some food or treats, then call to him when he comes into your yard. Don't call too loudly or obnoxiously (cats are pretty sensitive to loud noises....ever noticed how skiddish they can be around jumping, screaming children?).

I'd suggest soft food, heated up in the microwave so the smell carries. Although....this may attract more than the one male you're trying to befriend, lol.

Put out food. Then after a week when the cat expects it put out the food and stay about ten meters away. Slowly close the distance over a week or two. then after another week gently reach out your hand for the cat to smell. After that it should be friendly

You need to be very careful with stray cats. You don't have a history. My suggestion would be to call Animal Control to pick him/her up and let them know that if nobody claims him/her, you would like to. That way the cat will be checked out properly and you can take it directly into your home, put out food and water and give the cat time to adjust. Slow and gentle movements always. Good Luck
