My take: Mexicans want US laws, employment, and education. Why not give it to them by making Mexico the 51st through 58th states? It would certainly solve the immigration issue, if Mexicans can find what they want right at home: stability, a decent legal system, free education, and such. It would definitely dampen the drug import problem, with far less of a border to the south to deal with. Before I get lots of hostile responses, I'd like to hear from both sides. Serious answers only, please. This is a what-if question, not inciting to war.

To amplify the question, what I mean is to simply make a public offer to any Mexican states that want to join the US. It would HAVE to occur at the state level, because smaller governmental units would simply incite a civil war, with the Mexican government stomping them down hard. At the state level, that's not possible. (Seen the Mexican army lately? It's not even up to the standards of the Canadians!)

Dry land? yeah, sure, Sam X9 should try really visiting Mexico, not just the states in the border. In fact it´s well known that Mexico has all kinds of weathers, there´s the desert in the north and there´s like the "jungle" in the south. We have no "Dry Land " not at all. Come and visit Mexico!! You are all wellcome.

Just imagine if a huge swarm of Americans started infiltrating the mexican border? Making their country give us free medical attention, no taxes, and we use fake ID and use the system in every way possible. We would be deported or jailed or worse. But we tollerate it.
Why have we not taken over Mexico?
Because we are lazy and our gov has too many talks and not enough action when it comes to these things.
We are so worried about being politically correct that we don't want to step on any toes. We need to chuck that political correctness out the window and turn back into the red blooded America loving fighters that our ancestors were.

Are you gonna lead The first assault? Involuntary annexation is an act of war. Mexico has 10 States, and the 8th largest city in the world. As yet none of them have applied for admittance into the United States. Texas fought a war of independence with Mexico, won it, and then, 5 years later, was admitted to the Union. It is safe, then, to conclude that no Mexican State WANTS to be in our union. In fact, many of the illegal immigrants have voiced sentiments of forcibly taking back the area ceded to the U.S. in 1848, and regard themselves as the vanguard.
I like your idea, but it just won't work

Saying that "mexicans want to come to america" is extremely subjective. Just because a portion of the population doesn't want to stay doesn't mean that the people in better positions than them want to leave. You have to take into consideration that there is probably a reason citizens of mexico are wanting to leave and part of that may be that the people in charge are taking advantage of their power, and I am sure that those people wouldn't want america taking over. And I am not sure if it is best for american to just take over a country that supposedly admires our system. Perhaps a more reasonable solution would be to help them establish a government more like our own

That would completely open the border. Do you think that the local Mexicans are going to sit on their hands waiting for us to build infrastructure? Look at how slowly rebuilding the Gulf coast after Katrina is taking. El Norte would be deluged with new citizens looking for better locations and work. There would be major civil upheaval.

Absolutely not. What would they have to bring to the table besides poverty disease non-english speaking people by the masses. Nope not a good idea at all. As far as the drug trade it would still be there and then have a clear route unimpeeded into the United States. Better rethink this one Bud, taxes are high enough without having to support more poverty stricken illeterate people with only the will to work and no jobs to fill. NO THANKS!!

Last year, Mexico received a record $20 billion in remittances from migrant workers. That is equal to Mexico's 2004 income from oil exports and dwarfing tourism revenue.
Arriving in small monthly transfers of $100 and $200, remittances have formed a vast river of "migra-dollars" that now exceeds lending by multilateral development agencies and foreign direct investment combined, according to the Inter-American Development Bank.
The money Mexican migrants send home almost equals the U.S. foreign aid budget for the entire world, said Arturo Valenzuela, director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University and former head of Inter-American Affairs at the National Security Council during the Clinton administration.
"Where are we going to come up with $20 billion?" to ensure stability in Mexico, Valenzuela asked at a recent conference. "Has anybody in the raging immigration debate over the last few weeks thought, could it be good for the fundamental interests of the United States ... to serve as something of a safety valve for those that can't be employed in Mexico?"

The US would face even MORE illegal immigration......
Making Mexico part of the USA would make the border lower to countries with much more economic problems and poverty...
The only reason why there isn't as much Salvadorians and Hondurans in the USA than Mexicans is because they have to cross the central American borders first...
Sometimes they can't even make it through Mexico, some get lucky and make it all the way to the "promise land"..

I think your question sounds very well thought out, and has merit. I happen to think that we could solve a lot of our problems with Mexican illegal aliens with what you suggest. And maybe some day it will work. I live in California and we have a big problem with Mexican illegal aliens. And I would love to see a solution to the problem.

Because we already have enough problems to worry about at home and abroad, and if you throw in a whole 'nother country's worth of problems I think everything would take a hit. Not to mention - we are struggling this bad to get Iraqi's to fall in line with the "Democracy" we are trying to develop there, how would it go in Mexico? I think we'd be in the same boat there as well trying to instill our governing rules and laws.
