It is not so much about it being easier to move around in. Lice do not like oils. One of the most effective ways to get rid of lice is to soak your hair in olive oil. The natural oils in your hair clog the lice's ability to breathe. generally-when your hair is dirty- it will be extremely oily- squeaky clean hair is a lice paradise because there is very little oiliness.
I use VO5 or a similar conditioner in my children's hair- it is nourishing to their hair, and it provides just enough oiliness to deter a lice infestation and I can keep their hair clean.
This is not a 100% guarantee that they will not get lice but it help. If they do however get lice- a good coat of olive oil all throughout the hair for a couple of hours, wash and then comb with vinegar to release the eggs- much cheaper, safer and more effective than chemicals

It doesn't matter once you have lice you have them. They move around on your scalp really and that is where they lay their eggs (nits) around your hair shaft at the scalp. Live eggs are stuck to you scalp. Dead ones are usually loose. If you ever see what lice look like they are gross. Awful to think they are feeding on your blood. It's hard to get rid of them because you have to clean and vacuum everywhere and everyone needs to treat themselves in the family...and then at school or wherever the outbreak occurs.
You have to boil your hairbrushes and vacuum mattresses, and wash all clothes and hats and coats, etc.
This is why it's so hard to get rid of. I don't think it's true that dirty hair ATTRACTS lice...you just need to be in close proximity with someone who has it. It's often associated wtih poor people, who would get it from unsanitary conditions and then do nothing to stop the spread and also because of close proximity...you can see where a poor village or something would be infested...that is why the link between povery or "dirty" and hair...but anyone can get it and I see at least a dozen letters come home from school each year so check, check, check. Don't share helmets or hats or brushes with anyone ever.
At school usually everyone's jackets and hats and bags are all piled together...easy to see how it would spread when parents don't bother treating their kids.
And it's not just treating but treating properly which means NIT PICKING...literally...you have to get each and every nit out or around and around you will go!!!

Lice prefer clean hair and stay mostly the nape of the neck and behind the ears.
Nevertheless we still have to keep our hair clean.

They prefer clean hair. That doesn't mean that not washing your hair is going to get rid of them. You have a lot of cleaning to do. It is a pain to get rid of those things. You may have gotten them all out of the head and hair, but you have to remember where you sleep, sit and rest your head and such. Wash your linens in hot water and there is a linen spray out there that you can spray your furniture with and even vacuuming your furniture is a good idea. Of course don't forget to wash your hair with like RID and use the comb that is provided to get the nits out.

lice are not fussy.....they will live in any hair, and are highly contagious, all you have to do is sit near someone like on a train or bus, and they can get to you
