Orange Pekoe is a grade of tea, not a type of tea. Tea leaves are graded with a fairly complicated system for labeling. Most tea in the US is in bags and is orange pekoe grade black tea. Big names like Lipton and Tetly have strict standards of blending their tea so that each bag tastes the same. That is probably the reason restaurants seem to serve the "same" type of tea.
All tea comes from one plant...camellia sinensis. From this one plant, depending on how it is processed we get the three types of tea: Black, Oolong and Green.

Usually a blend of black tea and Orange Pekoe (not sure if that is spelled correctly) if you're talking like the bag of Lipton or Tetley tea.
Lots of foks drink flavored teas - and some green tea... but the common everyday tea is usually black and the orange pekoe

In most stores and restuarants it's usually referred to as "black cut". Some of the better tasting tea is "orange pekoe". And sometimes a mixture of the two.

American style tea seems to be an attempt at orange pekoe, but not a very good one!

Typical. Look at all the answers all over the place here & only one answer is right. Right?
I think, "Gee, look at all the silly amateur experts expressing themselves."
They might be right or wrong, most are wrong. I don't know this answer myself.
Is the 'correct' answer a consensus? Is anybody's answer here right?
Being 'an amateur expert' in some situations could get ya kilt!
