Firstly Buddha never instituted a religion. He said not to make a religion out of this but they did anyway . That's why you will hear many a scholar refer to Buddha's teachings as a philosophy..
Now, my advise to the religious is ignorance is bliss... learn to live with it and although most of the noteworthy development of morals has been established by religions they are also responsible for most of the evil as well .so since few people ever develop the courage of conviction to abandon the religion they inherited along with the sins of their fathers or learn to think on their own instead of blindly parroting back whatever their religion demands my advise is to learn to live with the dismaying ignorance that comes along with the good ,don't kill follow the commandments that is,and if you say Mecca or Bust enjoy yourself!
Be good ! meditate and enjoy life!

Happiness is the release from the prison of self.
""Unless one accepts dire vicissitudes, he will not attain. To me prison is freedom, troubles rest me, death is life, and to be despised is honour. Therefore, I was HAPPY all that time in prison. When one is released from the prison of self, that is indeed release, for that is the greater prison. When this release takes place, then one cannot be outwardly imprisoned. When they put my feet in stocks, I would say to the guard, 'You cannot imprison me, for here I have light and air and bread and water. There will come a time when my body will be in the ground, and I shall have neither light nor air nor food nor water, but even then I shall not be imprisoned.' The afflictions which come to humanity sometimes tend to centre the consciousness upon the limitations, and this is a veritable prison. Release comes by making of the will a Door through which the confirmations of the Spirit come."
(Abdu'l-Baha, Abdu'l-Baha in London, p. 120)

I do not know of any religion whose precepts include a method to be happy. All of them admonish you to do certain things, or not do certain things, in order to appease a deity of some sort, but happiness as a concept is not part of this. Odd that this had never occurred to me before.

Jesus said "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things will be added to you". Happiness is not gained by pursuing what we think will make us happy. I found found perfect peace by giving up control of my life to Jesus Christ. He has ordered my life and I want for nothing.
Jesus also said "he who seeks to keep his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for my sake, will find it". Funny, it's the complete opposite of what the world teaches you to do. Give up your own agenda in life, turn yourself over to Jesus Christ and live for His purposes. And then look at what He will do...He will give you a beautiful garden in which to live.
