I am just wondering what everyone else thinks of the fact that the home town of the Canadian soldier killed by friendly fire does not having any plans to honor him with the exception of lower the flags at city hall. He was a Canadian Olympian in 1992 in Barcelona and died serving his country. The mayor has not even offered his condolences in the local paper or on the local t.v. station. Do you think this is disrespectful?

I live in Hamilton as well and he was a friend of mine. I don't think offering your condolences in the paper or on t.v. is invading a families privacy. I don't expect the city to shut down for the day but I do think that a garden or park named after him would be a nice thing to do to honor him. I don't think it is disrespectful to other soldiers that have or may lose there lives in the war. I think all hometowns should honor their fallen soldiers.

The family has asked for privacy at this time, ( I live in Hamilton)and that should be respected. As apposed to the US goverment we are allowed to show repatriation of our dead heros as they come back home. The Bush administration stopped this practise almost 2 years ago so no pictures of flag drapped coffins appear on the nightly news. When our soliers arrived home today the GG, Head of Defence was there to grieve and show respect...when was the last time GW meet his dead soldiers coming home?

BTW GG is the Govenor General or Queens representatve here.

No. It would be disrespectful for the other service members that have lost there live's. That's great that he was a Olympian, way to go buddy. He lost his life during war, he's not the first person to do that. He is no different during a time of war then all the others service members. You don't see any body giving special funeral's for Joe Smoe that wasn't a Olympian. That's one of the biggest problems with the world today. Just because some one did something "special", they think they deserve special treatment. I am not saying that the Mayor is doing the right thing on this matter. (not offering his condolences). But what do you want. The entire city to shut down for the day. No what happened to him is no different then what happens to other service member's on a day to day basis.

It became into an exceedingly unhappy journey, and he became into this sort of Canadian we are all so pleased with. We have been in Barcelona in 1992 whilst he competed. this is obtainable his living house city will honor him -- he rather merits it, and so does his kinfolk. it won't be planned disrespect, yet probable they simply don't be attentive to what to do because of the fact the placement has by no skill arisen in the previous. CBC did an exceedingly nice document on him. there have been countless nice youthful Canadian adult males killed by making use of friendly hearth. it is tragic adequate whilst they lose their lives in a conflict, yet whilst they are taken by making use of friendly hearth, this is much greater complicated to settle for. Canadians everywhere grieve with the families and buddies of all of the fallen squaddies.

The mayor didn't offer his condolences? Is that true?

I support the war in Afghanistan but I doubt that even the most ardent of liberal politicians would refuse to send condolences to the family of a constituent who died serving his country.

There must be more to the story, I hope so (will now check Google News)

Maybe Canandians handle things differently...after all...they reseuurected a huge red paper clip in honor of a barterer...how come not something for defending their country.
