To all the missinformed people automatically assuming that I was giving the cop a bad attitude first, dont be so quick to jump on an officers dick just because he has a badge. And to the guy who said it makes no sense to give commission because they will write out unnecesarry tickets, its funny how they dont give commission, but it makes sense to set a quota.

And to DH, how the hell is asking a simple question whining? Im just glad you actually arent a cop or it would just be one more power-hungry asshole who thinks its ok for them to give out tickets to someone they dont like.

Wow, I was expecting some "The government always knows best and is always right" ***-kissing answers, but not so many. First off, people that are crying about "Oh I think you have a bad attitude, you deserved that ticket." Nowhere in my question does it even say that I got a ticket, it was just a simple question, so how about YOU stop complaining by posting useless comments that dont answer the question.

I'm glad RJ answered this question. It's nice that someone inserted some common sense into this juvenile whining. He is correct, in most places in the US, quotas are illegal. Traffic units are out specifically to enforce traffic laws, so obviously they give out lots of tickets. Officers don't get higher pay for more tickets. Your question makes you sound like a dick, so I'm sure the Officer got the same attitude from you. If I were a cop, I would've given you a ticket too.

Well, I just read your additional details...now you really are whining.

How can you really ask that question. Doesn't it make sense to believe that if officers got paid commision on tickets then they would write so many more than they actually do. In response to them being *****, yeah, there are a few out there that let the badge go to their heads, or that got picked on in school so they take it out on citizens sometimes. All in all though, if an officer was a dick to you, then you probably deserved every damn bit of it. Most of the time, when officers reach the point of being "*****", it is because they are dealing with ignorant people that try to tell them how to do their jobs or explain to the officer that they pay our salaries, or there are more important criminals to catch than speeders.

I agree with the other people about you attitude. I mean maybe the cop was having a bad day and you were too so things got blown out of proportion but anyway you have to remember they are here to protect us. That is their job. They get paid to do their job and do not get commission for doing it. Nobody likes getting pulled over but when you do it is for a reason, you did something wrong and got caught. Just be glad you got caught before you hurt someone... Suck it up and go on with life. There is no reason to give the officer problems when all they are doing is doing their job.

They do not work on commission, and they do not have quotas. (At least not in any department I've been associated with.) As for the officer getting overtime to come to court, that usually doesn't happen either. At least in Missouri, overtime laws are different for police officers than for other workers. Police officers must work many more hours than the average worker to even qualify for overtime, and most of the time the extra hours worked don't qualify for overtime. So, in addition to having to work weekends, holidays and overnights and having to put up with people who think they're "*****" just for doing their job, they also get screwed out of overtime. (And by the way, "alot" is not one word. Ever. It's two words. A lot.)

No, they do not. And in many places, quotas are illegal. Most police officers who write a lot of tickets do it becuase they are assigned as traffic officers. Their job is specifically to enforce traffic regulations. So they are not likely to give warnings. Their job is to enforce traffic laws, and the way that is accomplished is by writing tickets. Officers assigned to patrol and other areas don't generally write tickets unless it is a blatant violation or the person has a really bad attitude when pulled over.

So maybe the cop was a "dick" to you because you were a dick first. You broke the law. You got busted for it. Don't get an attitude with the cop because he was doing his job. Accept responsibility for your actions and stop trying to blame others.

No. That would lead to all sorts of corruption and violations of law enforcement principles.

Some police departments do ask officers to meet certain quotas or guidelines of number of tickets to issue for three main reasons.
1--The city raises money by collecting on the fines, and most cities really need it.
2--The number of tickets issued is one way of estimating how productive an officer is.
3--It's the only way officers have of improving traffic safety, and it's the only motivation for people to follow parking law. These laws are for everyone's safety and the only way for people to get an equal chance of getting a parking space.
